Round Norfolk Golf Tour summer comp 2015. Round 5 at Costessey Park

A wet Wednesday saw the 5th round of this years Round Norfolk  Golf Tour summer comp 2015 take place at Costessey Park. The weather forecast was particular bad so everyone was surprised when the field of 4 tee'd off in some sunshine.

Once again Bob started badly popping his tee shot into the river that guards the first green. In 5 attempts this year he has still not bettered a double boggy on the first hole so maybe should think about changing his warm up routine. However once he got going a par on the 3rd and birdie on 6th gave him a respectable 16 half way points
Bob Holling his putt on the par 5 4th
Kevin started better with a couple of pars and a birdie in the first 6 holes. At this point the heavens opened for a proper down poor which seemed to effect Kevin's putting as he 3 putted the next 4 holes. He had 15 pts after 9.

Meanwhile after a slow start Chris had a purple patch scoring 13 pts in 4 holes. However the rain seemed to effect her badly as well, as the points dried up leaving her on 17.
Tee shot to par 3 3rd and a par
Ian got off to a very fast start and already had 15 pts when the rain started. Unlike the other players he appeared water proof and completed the front 9 with a big lead and 21 pts.

Despite the weather improving over the back 9 Bob's game didn't and he feel away badly getting only 8 pts and 24 overall for a comfortable last place.

Ian continued strongly and despite a blob on the 12th (his only one of the day) he got another 18 pts to be a clear winner on 39.
Ian teeing off on Par 3 14th and thanks to a helpful tree bounce 2 more pts

Kevin teeshot on 14th leading to 2 pts
The only contest was for second place with Kevin trying to catch Chris. Kevin missed his big opportunity on the 13th, where Chris got a blob, as despite bouncing back into the fairway from 3 succesive shots into trees he then managed to 3 putt for a blob as well.

As they reached the last hole Kevin would need a par and Chris a blob to tie for 2nd. Chris did her bit putting her second shot into the river and with Kevin on the edge of the green things were looking good. However the 3 putt problems returned and only 2 pts secured meant Chris kept her £1 prize money.

Despite no winnings today Bob still leads the money list however the other comps are well spread. Chris has best stableford average and highest score in a round, Kevin is leading the eclectic and Ian the lowest blobs average per round.

With a slightly larger field expected at  Barnham Broom Hill course it could be all change.

As a new feature I will included current course records for each course. Ian equaled Bob's 2012 Costessey course record of 39pts. BB Hill record is currently jointly held by Kevin (2014) and Bob (2012) on 35 pts.

Round Norfolk Golf Tour summer comp 2015. Round 4 at Swaffham

On a lovely sunny Tuesday round 4 of this years Round Norfolk Golf Tour summer comp 2015 was held at Swaffham. It proved to be the closest competition yet.

Kevin was first on the tee and immediately hit his drive a bit left, against a tree and never to be seen again. This sent him into a fit of injustice which lasted most of the front 9 as he claimed the golfing gods (and everyone else in the world) were conspiring against him and causing him to have 4 blobs in the first seven holes. In amongst the mayhem he also got 2 pars and a birdie (albeit for only 3 pts and more whinging) to end the 9 with a respectable 13 pts.
Kevin duffing teeshot on 6th for another blob
Chris also started badly, probably put off by someones unnecessary ranting, and blobed 2 of the first 4 holes. After that normal service was resumed and she too ended the first 9 on 13 pts.
Chris's approach shot to the second ended up in the hollow on the left for a blob
Ian was having a solid if not spectacular start and scored on every front 9 hole for 15 pts.
Ian teeshot on the first
Meanwhile Bob was a model of inconsistency with a blob on the first followed by a birdie (for 4 pts) on the second, a blob on the 6th was then followed up with a par on the hardest hole for another 4 pointer. This meant Bob lead at halfway on 16 pts.
Bob sinking his birdie putt on the 2nd
The back 9 was very exciting with the lead constantly changing hands. Just as anyone got into the lead they would muck a hole up letting someone else take over. It went like this

Leader after 10 holes Ian.
Ian approach to the 11th for a solid 2pts
Leader after 12 holes Kevin
Kevin slicing drive on 15 on way to a scrambled 2pts
Leader after 13 holes Ian
Leader after 14 through 16 holes Chris and Bob tied
Bob Teeing off on the long par 3 12th
Leader after 17 hole Chris and Ian
Chris Teeshot on short 14th leading to a par
So coming to the 18th hole Kevin was on 27 pts, Bob on 28 and Chris and Ian on 29.

Kevin hit the best drive and was in prime position after Ian had hit a tree and Bob and Chris fluffed their second shots. It would just take a good second from Kevin to snatch the prize but once again the golfing gods did not look kindly on him as his ball bounced off into a greenside bunker of which it was never to come out. There then followed another 20 minutes of stomping and moaning.

Meanwhile Ian had given up on the hole and Bob had found his way on to the green in 3 shots. Chris decided to play a chip and run from same way out for her 4th shot (the hole was a ridiculously short par 5 for the ladies) and hit it perfectly as the ball rolled into the hole for a birdie 4pts and endrd any last hole drama.

So a second win for Chris moves her up the money list and she is also leading all the other competitions. Next week the tour moves to everyone's favourite Cosstessy Park.

Round Norfolk Golf Tour summer comp 2015. Round 3 at Bungay

After the excitement of the Masters at Cromer last week, then on Wednesday we returned to a standard tour event at Bungay.

After early confusion over the starters list, 4 players set off for the round.

Once again Bob got off to a poor start with many balls flying into the trees and only 5 points after 7 holes and 10 pts overall for back 9.
Poor drive from Bob on second leading to a ball into the pumping station and no pts
Kevin didn't fair much better and thanks to 3 front 9 blobs scored only 13 pts. He never recovered from turning an excellent position on the first into a blob and whinged on about it for most of the round.
Good drive from Kevin on 5th leading to a par
Meanwhile John was having one of his normal up and down displays with 3 3 point holes and 3 blobs for 15 front 9 pts
John in the valley of sin on the 2nd.
While all this was going on Chris was getting on with taming the course and went point crazy with 4 3 pointers plus a 4 point par and birdie. If she had worked out how to putt up a slope to actually reach the top, of the 7th she would have had even more than the 24pts she had at half way.
Getting out of Bunker at par 3 7th.
Unfortunately this was followed with several putts up and down the hill on the green for a blob
On the back 9 it soon became clear Kevin and Bob would be fighting out for 4th place. Kevin was very consistent scoring on 8 of the 9 holes but unfortunately none of these were worth 3 pts so only got 12 more to finish on 25.
Approach shot to par 4 13th which went ok and 2 pts were secured
As per all rounds this year Bob had a better back 9 and also scored on 8 holes as well but thanks to some pars he got 16 pts to win the 3rd place 50p prize keeping him at the top of the 2015 money list.

Bobs tee shot to par 3 15th leading to 2 pts
John's game was now well in the groove and his decision to miss the masters to play some tournaments in Portugal looked like a good one. He scored on every hole and got 18 pts to finish with 3 pars and 33pts for the £1 second place prize.
John in Valley of Sin again but this time on the 12th
It was just left to see how many pts Chris would win by and what total would be set in the most stableford pts in a round comp. Everything was looking good for a monster score until an unexplainable run of 1 pt in 3 holes constrained her final total to 40 pts.
Chris putting for birdie on par 3 12th, she missed.
After 3 comps the leaders of the competitions are well spread so it is still all to play for as the Tour moves on to Swafham next Tuesday.

Round Norfolk Golf Tour summer comp 2015. Round 2 The Masters at Cromer

Tuesday saw the first ever Round Norfolk Golf Tour summer comp Major as the Masters was held at Royal Cromer. Only 3 players had made the starting line up but on a fine day by the sea things looked set for a cracking competition.
looking back down 1st fairway to clubhouse and light house
Things got off to a bad start when the players discovered it would be a £35 green fee but after a few deep breaths everyone was ready for the off.

Bob got off to a shaky start averaging only a point a hole over the first 7. Although this was soon to change.

Ian also started slowly with only 7 points over the first 6 but 9 pts over the next 3 holes saw him have a credible 15 points at half way.
Ian teeing off on difficult 6th
Kevin got off to the best start and had a 3 pt lead after 6 however his progress halted with a blob on the 7th to end the front 9 in second place with 14. By this time Bob had started his recovery and moved to 12pts.
Another wayward teeshot from Kevin on the 4th but he was scrambling well and managed 2 pts
Things rapidly start to change on the back 9 as Kevin got a blob, par and then 4 successive single point holes to fall away. A birdie on the short par 4 16th at least meant his eclectic improved but a total of 27 pts in good conditions was never going to be enough.
Kevin 2 putting for another single point as storm clouds gather overhead, or is it Bob's finger?
Despite his half way lead Ian also struggled picking up just 7 pts in the opening 5 back 9 holes. A 4 pointer on the par 4 15th made sure he secured 2nd place with 29 pts.

Bob had started a Bob charge and went par crazy with 4 pars over the first 5 holes shooting him into the lead. He continued to play well and could even afford to blob the last and win easily with 33 pts.
As it was a major it was double prize money which gave Bob a big lead on the 2015 money list.

Next week is back to the normal tour with a trip to Bungay.

Round Norfolk Golf Tour summer comp 2015. Round 1 Royal Norwich

Tuesday saw the first round of this years revamped Round Norfolk Golf Tour summer competition take place at Royal Norwich.

There was a bumper field of 5 but with conditions extremely windy scoring was going to prove difficult. However Chris made a nonsense of the conditions on the tricky par 3 first getting a par and 3 pts. With John, Bob and Ian all taking a 5 for 1 pt things were looking good for Kevin who had a long birdie opportunity. Sadly 4 putts later he left the green with no pts complaining about the wind. This was going to cost him dearly in the closest competition in the history of Round Norfolk golf.
Bob hitting approach to 3rd in wrong direction leading to 0 pts
All players struggled throughout the front 9 but were scrambling points on most holes. Ian had the most up and down 9 with 3 blobs and 3 3 pointers for 12 pts,

At halfway Chris led with 14 pts, Ian 12, Kevin 11 and John and Bob averaging a point a hole at 9.
Kevin 2 putting for a 5 and 2 pts on par 4 6th hole
It was all change on the back 9. John started well and despite a blob on the 17th got 15 pts for a total of 25.
John trying to sneak off with the flag after getting 2 pts on the 16th.
After a solid start Chris's game deserted her and she only scored 4 pts in last 6 holes but still was leader in the club house on 25 pts.
Chris still looking confident for win halfway round back 9 until the pressure got too much
With 3 to play Kevin was looking in a strong position but a wayward drive and no pts meant he dropped back however with a par on the 17th he had 24 pts with the last to play. Meanwhile Bob was producing a typical Bob charge and with back to back pars on 16 and 17 had gone to 25 pts coming up the last. Ian had also had a good run scoring 9 pts in 3 holes (14,15,16) however a missed short putt on 16 and battle with the long grass on 17 meant he slipped back to also have 25 pts after 17.

With one point between them the 18th provided an anti climax as each player got 5 for 2 with positions unchanged. Therefore Bob and Ian shared first place and got £1.75 winnings to go joint top of the money kist.

Next week is the first major of the year the Masters at Cromer.
