Round Norfolk Golf Summer Comp. Round 8. Swaffham.

A rather overcast sky greeted the competitors at this week’s Round Norfolk Golf Competition taking place at Swaffham Golf Club. The Frazers are still pursuing their Round Europe CafĂ© Tour holiday in Slovenia leaving John Herring, Ian Bishop and Bob Spanner once again to compete for the available points in the ‘race to Sheringham’. Ian and Bob turned up at the pre-arranged time whereas ‘just in time’ Herring turned up with 10 minutes to spare and still managed to visit the toilet and have a chip and a putt.
In order to prove we really did find our way to Swaffham it was decided to take a group selfie with the score card. We probably should have taken a picture of the clubhouse  as well but we didn’t think of that at the time.

Team Selfie!

Play commenced on the par 5 1st hole with Bob having the best of the drives but failing to capitalise on it (a consistent theme throughout) and finishing with a bogey 6. John recovered well to card a 6 and Ian started in style with a well deserved par 5 which earned him 4 points (editors note: inflated by his very large handicap). Ian demonstrated great sportsmanship as all three players walked towards the 2nd hole, pointing out to Bob that not only had he left a club behind he had in fact left his golf trolley and bag behind as well. Well done Ian. That could have been a costly mistake for Bob!!

Bob Fought back on the 2nd to get a par 4 with Ian and John both recovering from some ‘off-piste’ activity to scramble a 6.

John doing some gardening on the second.

Ian looking for his shot off the tee. It’s behind you!

The par 3 3rd witnessed a full range of shots. Bob ended up left of the green, John to the right of the green and Ian decided to lay up 150 yards short of the pin! However, after the next round of shots, everyone had reached the green. Chaos then ensued, and some strong language was directed at the greenkeepers as everyone discovered how fast the greens really were. Bob managed a 4 with a longish putt while John and Ian kept going a bit longer for a 5 each.

After 3 holes, Bob held a 1 point lead over Ian with John in third place.
The par 4 4th saw Bob strike a very long drive and then hit his follow up shot into a greenside bunker which he struggled to get out of and then 3 putted for no points. Ian had a collection of errors and scored no points. John managed to get home with a 6 and pull back a point.

The par 4 5th saw John hit a superb straight drive. Ian followed up with a slightly shorter drive and Bob decided he liked the adjacent fairway better and ended up nearly back on the tee box for the previous hole. John played  a superb second shot leaving him with a birdie chance which he raced past the hole (accompanied once again by some severe criticism of the greenkeepers) after which he sank the 10 foot return putt for a very good par. Ian and Bob (despite his unusual tactics) finished with a 5 each although Ian scored 3 points curtesy of his Very Large Handicap (editors capitals).
Your correspondent is not too sure what happened at the par 3 6th as his shot was just right of the green by the trees and while he searched unsuccessfully for it, Ian recorded a very good par and John a further 2 points from a bogey.

After 6 holes, Ian had taken the lead with John close behind and Bob in third place following his two blobs.

The par 4 7th proved difficult for everyone (Stroke Index 1) with Bob getting the best result with a double bogey 6.
The par 4 dog leg 8th proved an old maxim to be true that longest isn’t always the best. Bob managed to draw the ball (might have been a controlled hook) all of 300 yds leaving his ball 40 yards short of the pin. Not to be outdone, Ian hit his ball nearly as far (about 260 yds). However, Bob managed to then take 4 shots to sink his putt while Ian chipped and putted in for a very good par. John discovered bunkers and failed to score again.

John fought back on the par 4 9th with a very tidy 4 despite hitting his second shot into a greenside bunker (clearly his practise on the previous hole was paying dividends). Ian decided it was his turn to practise his bunker play and ended up with no score. Bob hit his first poor drive and had to take a penalty drop finishing with a 6.
Scores at the halfway stage were: Ian 16, Bob 14 and John 13.

The par 4 10th followed a familiar pattern with Bob hitting a long drive within a sand wedge of the green. Ian hit to the left of the fairway with a low straight runner and John decided to go right. All 3 second shots then managed to find greenside bunkers. Bob surprisingly sunk a longish putt to grab a 5 when a birdie had looked on the cards. Ian and John missed easier putts to score 6.

The par 4 11th proved difficult for everyone. Bob and Ian failed to score and John two putted to take a point.

The par 3 12th saw the usual spread of shots, a string of invective from John (I had my fingers in my ears so not sure what he actually said), followed by a superb chip and putt from John to salvage a par. Ian and Bob chipped and two putted for a 4 each.

The par 5 13th was unlucky for Ian as he managed to hit a tree about 70 yds from the tee and lose his ball. Despite this he recovered to save a point. John hit a long tee shot into a fairway bunker and then need three shots to get out. However, a very good pitch and two putts rescued a 7 and two points. Bob hit a superb drive round the corner of the right handed dog leg and a good follow up shot within 50 yds of the green. He then took five shots to find the hole (story of his life).

This turned out to be a critical stage of the game as all three players now had 20 points!
John now started to take a grip on the lead. He was the only player to score on the par 4 14th and took a 2 shot lead to the par 5 15th hole. All 3 players reached the green in 3 shots but putting proved difficult on a very fast and sloping green. Ian and John scored 6 each and Bob 4 putted for a 7.
The par 3 16th saw a variety of approaches with Bob choosing to proceed via the front bunker. All three players ended with a 4. John retained his two shot lead with two holes to play but Ian (because of his very large handicap J) was still threatening as he would receive two shots more than John and Bob over the next two holes.

The par 4 17th saw John maintain his lead with a very tidy par. Ian started with a good drive, hit a wayward second shot but recovered superbly to card a 5 (and three points). Bob failed to make an impact on the others with a bogey 5 for two points.

Ian and John admiring their tee shots on the 17th.

Going into the long final par 4 18th (431 yds),  John led with 29 points, Ian was second with 27 and Bob was trailing 3rd with 25. No-one was prepared for the dramatic events that were about to take place!!!!

John hit his drive down the fairway but without his usual distance. Ian pulled his drive left and hit a tree. Bob smashed his drive 280 yds straight down the middle of the fairway. At this stage Ian’s second place looked under threat. Ian however, found his ball and played a superb shot out of the woods onto the fairway just short of Bob’s drive. John managed to pull his second shot left and then a catalogue of errors resulted in him failing to score (chance for Ian?). Ian in the meantime failed to hit the green with his third shot. Bob meanwhile, landed his second shot 20 foot from the pin and then somehow managed to talk his ball into the hole for a birdie and 4 points. Not surprisingly John and Ian did not share Bob’s euphoria. Ian 3 putted from the edge of the green to rescue 1 point.

Those of you who have been following this will have realised that the final scores were now: John 29, Bob 29 and Ian 28. John suggested using countback to find an outright winner, but Bob pointed out that Kevin had never adopted this approach previously (and he was also worried that John might win!).

The Round Norfolk Golf Tour moves to Bawburgh next week, the home of Norfolk Golf (well at least for Kevin, Bob and Ian), when ‘Kuch’ Frazer will be back competing for points and restoring sanity to the blog.

Round Norfolk Golf Tour summer comp. Round 7 Costessey

This week the Round Norfolk Golf Competition took place at Costessey Park Golf Club in weather more suited to the Arizona Desert than Norwich in summer. Due to the Frazers abandoning the UK for a two week stay in their Slovenian hide-away, the attendance was reduced to 3 (John, Ian and Bob).

John Herring adopted the 'just in time' tactics successfully employed by Kevin Frazer over the years, and turned up 10 minutes before tee-time, just as Bob was reaching anxiously for his phone.

The competition got under way on the par 3 first with all 3 tee shots clearing the water but unfortunately John's ball landed in the greenside bunker just under the lip. Without a clear shot, John had to pitch out across the green and eventually settled for a 5. Ian 3 putted for a 4 and Bob took an early lead with a par 3.

On the par 4 2nd hole, all three tee shots successfully avoided the fairway. John managed to land in the rough to the right over the stream on the 7th hole. Bob managed to clear the stream on the left and land in the rough by the 6th green. Ian didn't fancy either of these, choosing to top his drive 100 yds into the rough. All three players then proceeded to zig zag their way up towards the pin with Bob managing the best score with a 6.

Three good tee shots on the par 3 3rd hole all landed on or very close to the green. John managed to convert the best position into a 5 while Ian overshot the hole but recovered with a long putt to finish best placed with a 3.

After 3 holes Bob was the early leader, closely followed by Ian with John reflecting that perhaps he should have had a warm up first (and he never liked Costessey anyway).

However, the par 5 4th hole sorted the men from the boys and despite reaching the green in 3, Bob four putted for a 7, Ian scraped a point and John was back in the game with a tidy 5.

All three tee shots on the par 5 5th hole found the fairway, justifying the decision of the veterans 3 ball in front to wave them through. All three finished with a 6 although Ian scored 3 points due to his handicap advantage. At this point Bob (now playing for the first time with a 20 handicap) felt obliged to adopt a Kevin Frazer persona and mutter a few comments about large handicaps.

After 6 holes Ian and Bob were tied top with 13 points. However, over the remainder of the front 9 holes Ian pulled away, Bob made a mess of the 7th hole and John fell away.

At the halfway stage Ian led with 20 points, Bob was second with 17 and John third with 11.

The back 9 saw Ian continue steadily with only 1 dodgy hole and an unfortunate long drive on the 17th which finished in the river. John got his second wind and towards the end of the match looked like he might grab second place. Bob ran out of steam early on the back 9, recovered with a par and a birdie but in the end suffered from a long straight shot into the river on the 18th hole.

Final scores were Ian comfortably first with 37 points, Bob just second with 28 and John third place with 26. Ian's new sponsorship from Mazuno seems to be paying off.

As it was realised that with only three taking part, everyone was guaranteed at least a point, it was decided to organise another match before the Frazers returned!

The Norfolk golfing circus moves to Swaffham next week. Watch this space.

League table to follow on the Frazer's return to the uk.

Round Norfolk Golf Tour summer comp. Round 6 Thorpeness

Round 6 of Round Norfolk Golf Tour summer comp took place at Thorpness yesterday. A bumper entry of 5 paid golf pig their entry fee and teed off.
Entry fees being paid to golf pig.
The first group of Chris, Bob and Ian set off with an indifferent 1st hole performance. Chris started with her first of two blobs of the day but still got to 18 pts over the front 9.
Chris heeling the ball off the first tee for a blob
Despite back to back blobs on the 3rd and 4th hole Bob also recovered well for 17 half way points.
Bob's teeshot to the par 3 7th which he birdied for 4 pts.
Ian was finding the front 9 more tricky and finished with back to back blobs on 8 and 9 for 12 points at the turn.
Ian's tee shot on the first.
Meanwhile Kevin was struggling with his driver and putter in the group behind and struggled to 11 points the highlight was a par on the par 5 9th.
Kevin chipping to par 3 7th after laying up
John was going on nicely scoring on each hole and had a tidy 16 points coming to the 10th. He then started the back 9 with two pars to bring him back to handicap after 11 holes.
Fabulous bunker shot from John getting out from under the lip on the 2nd.
Unfortunately the back 9 did not turn out well for either player. Kevin managed to visit most of the gorse bushes and even put one teeshot down the road. He only added 8 more points to finish last with 19 pts.
John pointing to Kevins ball stuck half way up a gorse bush
From his fine start some bad luck and a few unwanted duffs meant John only managed another 4 points from the last 7 holes including 5 blobs. After chipping the ball at right angles into the ferns John gave them a bashing with his pitching wedge that they won't quickly forget. His 26 pts also left him out of any OOM rankings for the day.
John trying to escape from the ferns
Meanwhile up ahead there were no such difficulties with bandit 1 (Bob) and bandit 2 (Ian) both scoring well on the back 9. Bandit 2 getting 19 pts for a 3rd place total of 31.
Ian demonstrating his bunker skills on way to a respectable 31 pts
Chris was also going along nicely and coming down the last was just one point a head of Bob. Unfortunately for him it was yet another ladies par 5 (4 more than the men!!!!) and with them both scoring a 5 Chris went on to win by 2 pts.
Bob in full swing, if only he could get his weight forward!
The Tour moves on to Bawburgh in August which also see's the start of the best combined front and back 9 in August and September (inc Oct 1st) competition.

The Tour leadboard is hotting up especially in the average stableford points where Bob has just snuck back into the lead.

Round Norfolk Golf Tour summer comp. Round 5 Diss

Yesterday saw Round Norfolk Golf Tour summer comp, Round 5 at Diss (just inside the Suffolk boarder). With a large field of 5 attending the competition was split into two groups. John, Kevin and Chris followed by Bob and Ian.
Ian feeding entry into golf pig as Bob tries to pretend he has no change
The round started badly for Kevin and after first battling against a badly placed tree on the first he saw a good looking approach end up in the bunker and refuse to come out. However the bunker was punished as Kevin attacked it with his club before a fine display of swearing and more club throwing on the next hole. Things got worse and after the first 9 holes only 7 pts were in his golfing points bag.
Kevin attempting to chip after taking an unplayable penalty
drop from under a badly positioned tree on the first.
It was the first of 5 front 9 blobs
John had the opposite problem and after a solid front 9 (15 pts) fell away badly on the back 9 getting only 9 pts. The highlights were some fine swearing and a nettle bush getting an exceptionally savage beating with a 7 iron.
John scrambling well for a point on the 5th.
John 3 off the tee on the 14th leading to one of four back 9 blobs.
With Kevin and John's huffing and puffing Chris did well to keep her game under control and had a solid front 9 of 15 pts.
Chris teeing off on the first
Kevin had a good back 9 with the highlight being a birdie (his first of the season) on the last. He still finished with a dismal 23 pts and last place. Despite this birdie and John's poor back 9 he still beat Kevin by 1 pt with 24 pts.

Kevin tee shot on the par 3 12th leading to a 4 for ONE!!!!!!
Chris also had a good back scoring 16 pts for a total of 31 and third place for 1 OOM point.
Chris tee shot on 10th. It was never seen again but by using
Bob dropping rules she took a penalty and scored a point.
Meanwhile in the group behind a ding dong golfing battle was underway with points (and enormous handicaps) a plenty. Both Ian and Bob had the Diss course tamed and secured 21 pts each on the front 9.
Ian approach to 10th and surprisingly only 1 pt.
It was neck and neck as the pair approached the last with 37 pts to Bob and 36 pts for Ian.
Ian and Bob on tee on 12th.
I was waiting for Bob's tee shot but halfway through his pre tee shot routine the
phone battery light start to flash so I had to take photo.
When he started his pre tee shot routine the phone was fully charged.
As Ian played perfect golf down the 18th Bob got into difficulty and failed to score. Ian got a par 5 for 3pts and won the day for the second round running.
Bob putting off the green to try and rescue some points on the 18th. He didn't
So congratulations to Ian again. Its now on to Thorpeness in a fortnight where there is again a bumper field of 5 lined up to play.
